Almost not surviving the great depression, it had gone back-and-forth from a hotel to apartments since 1978, when it permanantly became low income dowtown housing. Getting over religious differences with your roommate

Saturday, March 06, 2010

If you were to ask most Americans what values are the most important to them, they will likely rank their religious beliefs at or near the top. For this reason, it is hard to imagine that someone would move in with another person with whom they may have serious religious conflicts with, but there are situations in which something like this could happen, such as when someone needs a roommate with little to no notice. Suddenly finding yourself living with someone with whom you have a serious religious conflict with can be downright scary, especially if you are the type of person who takes their faith very seriously. The first piece of advice you need if you find yourself in this situation is to get out of it as fast as possible. It can only lead to arguments, conflict and stress. If you think you can battle through it, here are a few tips.

If you are moving into someone else’s apartment, and they have already lived there for a good period of time, don’t expect to have the right to start decorating common spaces with religious decorations, especially if your roommate finds them offensive. Try to keep all signs of your faith in your own private area, and you can respectfully ask your roommate to do the same, although you need to realize that since they were there first and they already had those items hanging up, you can’t be shocked or surprised if they say no. The same conditions hold true if the situation is the other way around.

Feel free to talk about your religions, especially if you want to learn how other faiths work, but if you are incapable of accepting other people’s faith and freedom to worship, avoid the topic like the plague. Try to agree to not play overly religious music so that the other person can hear it.

Corporate vs. Individual Renting in Nashville

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

When it comes to renting an apartment in Nashville, you basically have two choices. You can rent from a corporate-run building that has a lease that resembles a small dictionary, or you can rent from an individual who draws up something that looks kinda legal but you really don’t know for sure. Most people prefer to go with the first option, since they automatically believe that their rights will be protected and that there is less chance of someone trying to pull a fast one if you sign a more official looking lease. While others prefer the working relationship between two people and feel that any problems can be reasonably worked out. Both choices have their potential pitfalls. Often times, people don’t bother reading the mammoth corporate lease they sign and sometimes there can be surprises in store. Rules vary from state to state on how late rent can be paid before fees are charged and one building may include the power bill in rent and others don’t. Make sure you have a full understanding of what your lease says before you sign it. When you rent from an individual, the main problems come from situations that aren’t spelled out in the lease. The landlord thinks its your problem and you think it’s the landlord’s. Just know that no matter what type of lease you sign, no renter/landlord relationship is conflict proof.
