With the growing inflation and the down falling economy, now days assisted living or having roommates is the best way to get rid of the expenses alone. But there are some issues that should be cleared well before. One such issue is the division of expenses. The payment of rent and the bills, and the other expenses, shall be put down on an agreement, if you think your roommates are not trustworthy. And documentation often keeps many problems away. So, get it documented and agreed upon mutually.

The next advantage of having roommates is the prospect to share household responsibilities. You need not do the cleaning, dusting, laundry, washing, cooking etc all by yourself. You can always divide the chores between you and your roommates. But in many cases these responsibilities may not always be even. If you just slap the responsibilities and duties on your roommates, they are probably not going to complete them, and then the mess will increase. Hence, this has to be done on mutual understanding basis, or this may lead to conflict and resentment, followed by an uneasy situations.

Of course mutual understanding and adjustment cannot flourish from day one, since you and your roommates may be from different backgrounds and lifestyles. So, obviously time is needed for you and for the things to settle down. Hence, do not hurry up in things, take your time and give your roommates time to understand each other, and the situation. Avoid getting too friendly initially, and give them their space and have your own space too.

Although your financial front is clear now. You have to compromise over your privacy, when you are sharing the apartment with other people. This is one of the most severe drawbacks of living with roommates.

After a long hectic day, who wouldn’t like to have someone to talk to? When you get back home, you know you have someone to share yourself with. Having roommates by

default, means that you have someone home with whom you can share your joys and sorrows, in the absence of your family.
